Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s seven breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.
This is the time of year when the big, malty beers, often barrel-aged, dominate the special release calendar. True to form, Ex Novo will be releasing three variants of its barrel-aged imperial stout, Kill the Sun, this Friday, which we will cover in our Look Back/Look Ahead Series article later in the week. There are exceptions, however, as Bow & Arrow, Boxing Bear, and La Cumbre are proving this week. The latter is releasing Terminally Chill Hazy IPA on tap and in cans this Friday at both locations. Bow & Arrow will then follow that with Desert Revival, a peach sour that has been aged for 18 months in oak barrels with wild culture strains of brettanomyces, lactobacillus, and pediococcus. The bottle release will take place Saturday at the brewery. At the same time, Boxing Bear is putting its popular Super Cereal Double Hazy IPA in cans. (Oh, and there will also be Standing 8 Stout in cans.) So if you are looking for that last-minute Christmas gift for a beer lover who is not a barrel-aged imperial stout fan (they reportedly exist), you have these three fresh beers to choose from this weekend.
On the new beer front this week, there are a few options to check out. Cantero brings back Blood Orange IPA and the very holiday appropriate Gingerbread Stout. La Cumbre still has Double-Aged La Negra, Bourbon-Barrel-Aged Malpais Stout on nitro, Gracias Por Fumar on nitro, and Noche de Paz leftover from its recent anniversary party. Marble gets experimental with IPA-X. Nexus has a special release today (Wednesday) of 2018 Cognac-Oak-Aged Hot Chocolate Milk Stout. Starr Brothers brings down the Weizenheimer this weekend. Toltec goes big with Doopy Hoppy DIPA.
Up in Santa Fe, Blue Corn rolls out Barley Rye Wine. Second Street has fresh batches of Tres Equis Lager, Kidder Special Bitter, and Old Pecos Porter. Tumbleroot taps Magia Negra, an American stout on nitro, plus has new bottles of Blackcurrant Sour and Mark of Midnight Imperial Stout. Further north, Red River is tapping Powder Day Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout on Saturday.
