The Week Ahead in Beer: More new brews are still rolling out into the market

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s eight breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.

Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.
Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.

Normally we lead Week Ahead with something a little feature-y. In the past it was about an event, or about a special release and the party to go with it. Obviously, that sort of stuff isn’t really happening anymore, so our focus is now really and truly about the beer. We would like to point out that breweries have taken another financial hit this week. On Monday, the governor’s office officially shut down liquor stores, from locally owned ones like Jubilation in Albuquerque and Susan’s in Santa Fe, to the big chains like Total Wine (after some initial defiance on their part). For packaging breweries like Marble and Santa Fe, that is one less outlet for beer sales in a time when sales are way, way down. Sales have dropped since the initial two weeks of the shutdown, when people restocked their beer supply. A recent poll of craft breweries by the Brewers Association revealed that 46 percent nationwide believe they will be forced to close permanently if things fail to improve in the next three months. So far no brewery in New Mexico has announced that it is closed permanently, so there is that, at least. But, none of us know when this pandemic will pass. If you are still able to get out and support breweries by purchasing beer (and food) to-go, please continue to do so, lest some of that predicted 46 percent ends up including some of your favorite places.

On the new beer front this week, there are a few new options to check out. Bow & Arrow has now made Hoka Hazy IPA a year-round beer available for crowler/growler fills. Ex Novo has added cans of Sons of Scotland and the new Spirits of the Dead Hazy IPA (also available for growler fills), plus Perle Haggard German Pilsner cans are back in stock. Marble will release its Cerveza Oscura in cans and for growler/crowler fills on Saturday after having pushed it back a week, plus Blackberry Gose is available for growler/crowler fills today (Wednesday) only at the downtown location. Nexus tapped Czech-Mex Golden Lager and Beam Me Up Scotty for growler fills. Quarter Celtic apparently dug up some 2018 Irish Handcuffs and put that imperial stout on for growler/crowler fills. Starr Brothers will release its own Mexican lager, Somos Cerveza, that was originally in honor of New Mexico United (we really miss soccer matches). As we mentioned last week, Steel Bender has put Double Raspberry Dynamite, Sparkfitter Amber, Die Dunkel Seite, and Cutbow Coffee Porter in cans, and Village Wit should join them early next week. Toltec goes out of this world with Marvin the Marzen available for growler/crowler fills on Friday.

Up in Santa Fe, Blue Corn tapped some Honey Ginger Kolsch for growler/crowler fills. Rowley Farmhouse Ales will roll out another run of Thrace Hazy IPA cans on Thursday. Otherwise it is quiet, but we can share that our friends at Bathtub Row Brewing in Los Alamos have decided to close for the next two-to-three weeks, due in part to running out of crowler cans, and because this is the projected period of the virus hitting its peak in New Mexico.
