Though the actual festival part of the Great American Beer Festival did not happen this year in Denver, the competition for medals still went on, albeit with far fewer New Mexico breweries participating than in years past.
As of the time of publication of this article, only 10 breweries (UPDATE: now it’s 12) told us that they took part in the blind judging competition, the results of which will be broadcast online today (Friday) at 5 p.m. In contrast, 16 breweries said they did not enter beers this time around, which is fairly understandable considering the current economic conditions and the cost of $160 per beer submitted.
Notable names not participating at GABF this year include Marble Brewery, the 2014 Small Brewery of the Year, as well as past medal winners such as Blue Corn Brewery and Tumbleroot Brewery and Distillery. Other breweries that said no this year were Beer Creek Brewing, Bombs Away Beer Co., Bow & Arrow Brewing, Gravity Bound Brewing, High and Dry Brewing, Palmer Brewery and Cider House, Ponderosa Brewing, Red River Brewing, Sidetrack Brewing, Taos Mesa Brewing, Thirsty Eye Brewing, Tractor Brewing, and Truth or Consequences Brewing.
Of course, there are many breweries that we never heard back from either way, including past medal winners Boxing Bear, La Cumbre, Santa Fe, Second Street, and Starr Brothers.
As for the 12 that we did receive confirmation from, Rowley Farmhouse Ales chose not to share the names or categories of their entries. Ex Novo Brewing shared categories only. For what we do know, here are the 91 categories for which each of the top-three finishers will be announced today. Use this as a handy guide to know when it is time to pay close attention to the broadcast.

Two of the entered beers are collaborations. The Barrel-Aged Tracksuit Stout from Steel Bender was made with friend-of-the-Crew Majin Garcia, while The Winchester from Quarter Celtic was a collaboration with the Crew. We may root a little extra for those two, if no one minds.
If any other New Mexico breweries update us on their entries before the awards ceremony begins, we will do our best to update this story. At some point tonight, or later, we will share the results and reaction from local winners.
Keep supporting local!
