Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s eight breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.
After last week’s “can-slaught” of 12 packaged beers from eight breweries, we can probably all agree that it might be nice to take a breath and relax this week. Oh, there are three new packaged releases (three cans, one bottle), but as dig out from back-to-back winter storms, it might just be nice to take advantage of the 25-percent indoor occupancy at some places, or maybe grab some old favorites to go that you haven’t been drinking with all the new brews rolling out. The Crew is having a slimmed-down version of our annual Stout Challenge this Sunday, giving us the chance to try some year-round and seasonal, adjunct-free/non-imperial stouts. Some of the stouts we hope to have on hand will include Dark and Lusty from Canteen, Double Plow Oatmeal Stout from Tractor, Brickie American Stout from Steel Bender, Mac Lomas Stout from Quarter Celtic, Shaman Stout from Toltec, Event Horizon Oatmeal Stout from Brew Lab 101, and last year’s winner, Malpais Stout from La Cumbre. Sounds like a good tour of the stouts, doesn’t it? Let us know what classics you might be perusing this week as temperatures hopefully warm up again.
The four new packaged releases this week are bottles of Anatomy of an Arrow, a mixed-culture sour from Bow & Arrow, cans of Unread Mentions Kveik Hazy IPA ansd Parting of the Sensory Hazy IPA from Ex Novo, and cans Black Wedding Black IPA from Beer Creek. Unread Mentions and Black Wedding are already available, while Anatomy comes out Friday, and Sensory comes out Saturday.
On the new draft beer front this week, there some fresh options to check out for pints or crowler/growler fills. Ale Republic added Best Coast IPA, Trailhead IIPA, Bug Juice Sour, Parasol Light Ale, and Diablo del Oro back to its lineup. Bosque has an aged stout called Sunday Traffic at all locations. Canteen tapped Social Capital with peach and mango, Canteen Mango Cider, and Sundance Kolsch. Casa Vieja has more Ghost Stout and Mon Cherry Cherry Wheat. Ex Novo also added ‘Cot Red Handed, an apricot wheat. (UPDATE) Gravity Bound tips its hand with Incline Inclinations, a new hazy DIPA. High and Dry brewed Cook County Lager for its recent anniversary, and Fradulent Zodiac Pale Ale is also available. Nexus has a new Marzen on draft. Palmer tapped a Milk Stout in honor of reopening indoor and patio seating. Starr Brothers added a new fruited wheat called Cherry Bombed.
Up in Santa Fe, things are quiet again. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row tapped a fresh batch of Hoppenheimer IPA, plus the new Amsdell XX Winter Ale and Black Pearl, a schwarzbier-inspired lager. Out in Moriarty, Sierra Blanca has Toasted Coconut Porter back on tap.

Your New Mexico brew history missed Dry Gulch Brewing (2000-2002) that took over the Bavarian Lager Cellar’s building and brewery. It started off as Bubbe’s Kitchen, but that was a disaster. The Kosher-style deli was abandoned and the entire place became Dry Gulch Brewing. Unfortunately, 9/11 did a number on lots of businesses and we did not survive very much into 2002. We closed down in April.
