Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s eight breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.
Anyone know where spring went? New Mexico is usually good for one freak storm after we officially hit springtime, and apparently this is it (or so we hope). Anyway, we do not have any particular subject to lead this here weekly roundup, so consider this the notebook version. First up, Tractor is reopening its Los Lunas taproom after a long shutdown. It all starts Thursday at 2 p.m., with plenty of beer, cider, and cocktails available, but the kitchen will not yet be open. This was, to the best of our knowledge, the last of the closed taprooms to reopen, another positive sign for the craft beer industry in New Mexico.
Over in a different county, Rio Rancho is turning 40 this year, and per the city’s request, Brew Lab 101 has brewed up RR40 Anniversary Irish Red. It went on tap last week for St. Patrick’s Day, but we just found out on Monday. Wow, 40 years ago was … 1981. This is hitting as hard as when Iron Maiden pointed out that this is the 39th anniversary of The Number of the Beast. Feel old yet?
Remember when we did that recent poll about the best beer name for a current seasonal? Yeah, ReSource just raised the bar for all future names with the announcement that their latest small-batch brew, due out Thursday for draft pours only, will be named Arrogant Burqueño. You win, Shawn Wright, you win.
As for can releases, Bosque is bringing back an award-winning classic, Scale Tipper IPA, this Friday. Bow & Arrow sticks with what works, namely a hazy IPA, this time called The Light of Western Stars, due out Friday. Boxing Bear is unleashing the Galaxy hop-led Spacewalk IPA on Saturday. Ex Novo is aiming to have ‘Cot Red Handed in cans by the weekend.
On the new draft beer front this week, there some fresh options to check out for pints or crowler/growler fills. Canteen has a fresh batch of Vamanos Jugo IPA on tap. Casa Vieja recently brought back O’Brien’s Irish Stout, At Whit’s End Belgian Wit, and Hoppy Birthday IPA. Marble gets experimental with IPA-X. Nexus brightens up the day with Burque Sunrise Light Lager. Ponderosa swapped out Peach Wheat with Raspberry Wheat. Sidetrack brings back one of our favorites, A Tribe Called Kolsch. Starr Brothers also resurrects one of its better seasonals, Brown Chicken Brown Cow.
Up in Santa Fe, Hidden Mountain unveils new batches of Road Runner IPA and The Good Life Dubbel. Rowley Farmhouse Ales goes big with Gumption, a new DIPA, (UPDATE) which also be available in four-pack cans. Down south, Truth or Consequences Brewing takes flight again on board Mothership IPA.
(WEEKEND UPDATE) Seven more beers popped up on draft, plus one in cans. Ex Novo brings back Bock Holliday Maibock on tap. Gravity Bound asks What’s Your Sign? with a new hazy DIPA, while also offering up a new batch of Garden Spot, a basil cucumber gose. La Cumbre tapped the delightful Despacio Pilsner. La Reforma puts on Blackberry Beret. Marble rolls with Tarantino’s Best Bitter. Sidetrack is tracking another batch of Kolsch Comet. And finally, Second Street has cans and draft of Sloppy Sloth Sabro Hazy IPA.
