Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s eight breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.
It’s not just a uniquely New Mexico thing to complain about the heat, but damn, if there was ever a justifiable period of time to do just that, it’s now. The good news is beer is served cold, and most breweries have lovely, air-conditioned interiors. If they don’t, well, you can always take your beer home, which we also help is good and cool (though none of us are going to want to look at that next electric bill). The good news this weekend is there are three notable can releases to help you restock your beer fridges. Bow & Arrow will release the latest version of their Sunbloom Saison on Friday, this time made with Sonoran white wheat and dry hopped with Motueka, Wakatu, and Saaz. It is all part of a special pride night celebration that runs from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Also Friday, Ex Novo is going big on the hops with Wild, Wild Vest, a new West Coast IPA made with Strata, Simcoe, and Chinook,. Meanwhile, La Cumbre acknowledges the change of the seasons the only way it can, by releasing the summer edition of Project Dank IPA, also on Friday. If your allergies are kicking up of late (ours are), this hoppy beast should at least temporarily clear your sinuses. Finally, Boxing Bear is doing its best to win the unofficial “best beer name of the year” with its new hazy IPA, Strata Bearious, which debuts Saturday at all four taprooms.
On the new draft beer front this week, there some additional fresh options to check out for pints or crowler/growler fills. Bosque brings back Citronic Red, while also adding Southbound Train, a hoppy wheat pale ale. Ex Novo tapped Total Request Lager, a rice lager with yuzu, and brings back Costume Party Hazy IPA. Gravity Bound hops to it with Petal Jumper, a New England-style DIPA. High and Dry brings back its lager, You Again Baby, after a short absence. La Cumbre has a new Belgian single, Green Cap. Sobremesa added North Valley Brown. Steel Bender has decided to Paint the Town with its new India brown ale. Thirsty Eye gazes upon an Ember Moon, its new Czech pilsner. Turtle Mountain is going old school with Public House Pale.
Up in Santa Fe, things are quiet. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row brings back CojonHaze.
