Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s six breweries, one in Socorro, one in Los Alamos, and one in Moriarty also joining the party.
In case the WIND outside wasn’t enough of an indicator, March is upon us. Fear not, there is more than WIND this month. You can always tell when spring has sprung simply by the fact that Marble will be making use of its outdoor stage downtown, with live music returning Thursday through Saturday (weather permitting, of course). Other bits of fun this month will of course include the NCAA Tournament, also known as that time when everyone stops being productive at work to instead obsess over their brackets. Breweries are outstanding places to watch games, but you probably already knew that. Of course, March also features one of the great drinking holidays, St. Patrick’s Day. Sierra Blanca will have their huge annual festival out in Moriarty, while in Albuquerque, Quarter Celtic will be combining their first anniversary party with the holiday for what should be an epic weekend (yeah, it falls on a Friday this year; don’t say we didn’t warn you). To kick things off in proper fashion, La Cumbre will open this month with the Cask Ale Festival on Saturday. Look for a lot more on that event, including what will be in the casks, in a separate story Thursday.
On the new beer front this week, there are a few new options to check out. Bosque rolls out Moon Cannon DIPA, Public House Pale Ale, and Tropics via Brussels. Broken Trail is getting hoppy for the first time, with Double Black IPA going on tap Friday. Hop Baller IPA is back in the game at Canteen. Dialogue wins best new beer name of the week with Micro Hands Session IPA. Drafty Kilt went dark with Obliviscaris Oatmeal Stout debuting over the weekend. Flix Brewhouse will celebrate the release of Logan this weekend with Mr. Cutty Fingers, a loganberry IPA. La Cumbre unveils a delicious rauchbock, Smoking Goat. Marble is definitely feeling hoppy with a fresh batch of Double IPA joined by Centennial Rye IPA and Northeast by Northeast. Ponderosa should have an IPL on tap this weekend. Starr Brothers has fresh batches of Red Zepplin and Thunderr Ale IPA.
Up in Santa Fe, SFBC introduces its latest Ever Changing Series entry, Red Dawn Saison. Second Street has more Railyard Red on tap, plus Ringwood IPA is back and 4 C’s Porter debuts.

The Natalia (9.5% ABV, 33 IBU) was oak aged, which means it might be the finest Baltic ever made. Get it quickly before it’s gone, which means before we drink it up.

Beers: SCH Scotch Lager, McSmack, Encierro Red Ale, Depravity (Barleywine), Oaked Depravity, Can’t Catch Me Copper Lager. Depravity (10% ABV) is a beast of a barleywine, and an oaked version is now on tap. The SCH Scotch Lager was brewed for a good cause, with $1 of every pint sold going to help the brother of brewer Mick Hahn in his fight against cancer. You can also find it on tap at a number of other breweries around town.

This version of Sin Barreras imperial stout features toasted oats, toasted cocoa nibs, and toasted coconut.

The latest entry in the Ever Changing Series, Red Dawn Saison, will have you yelling “Wolverines!” or something of that sort. Snowflake IPA is back, now part of a series of seasonal-themed IPAs called the In-and-Out Series. Adobe Igloo is back on tap and in six packs.
Happy Hour/Discounts: $1 off growler refills in the tasting room on Mondays. $2 pint Tuesdays at the Eldorado Taphouse. On Wednesday, there is a $2 pint special in the tasting room. On Thursday, there will be $1 off growler refills at the Eldorado Taphouse.

Beers: Barrel-aged Whiskey Stout, Cherry Sour, Interstella Vanilla. The Whiskey Stout is back for a short time. The Cherry Sour is back for another run. Look for Cherry Wheat in bottles in the coming weeks.

Beers: Zia Pilsner, 790 IPA, Hose Co. 1 Red Lager, Venom IPA, KC’s Irish Stout, Raspberry Wheat, Quebradas Sunrise Amber. The beers are starting to run out, but at $2 per pint from 4 to 9 p.m. every day, it’s easy to see why. It’s all cash only, and TC’s last day of business will be March 25.
