The Week Ahead in Beer: Boxing Bear throws a block party

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s six breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, and one in Las Cruces also joining the party.

Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.
Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.

First up, a programing note. All ABQ Beer Week events at breweries will be listed with our daily previews, which begin Thursday. For this week and next, this feature will only focus on events that are not affiliated with ABW, though we will include the new beer releases here.

OK, with that out of the way, we would like to highlight Boxing Bear’s Block Party, which runs this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The brewery is bringing together local artists and vendors for a relaxed celebration of our community. Vendors will include High Desert Flameworks, Fat City Confections, Bosque Azul Pottery, Urban Hotdog Company, and CCR Corn Roasters. Boxing Bear will also be releasing its Black and Blue Sour Fruited Tart. D’Santi Nava and other musicians will also be on hand. This is not a 21-and-over event, so bring the family along.

On the new beer front this week, there are a few options to check out. Bosque got all sneaky and released a fresh batch of Scale Tipper this week, plus the charity IPA, Spacelion. Boxing Bear also has Blood Orange Pale Ale. Canteen will release Oompa Lupulin DIPA on Saturday and a barrel-aged version of Obey the Darkside Stout on Tuesday (we will have more on those in our Beer Week daily previews). Dialogue gets quirky with Men Who Stare at Goats Maibock. Marble wants to transport you to some place tropical with Pina Colada. Nexus will release Big Ugly Nasty (BUN) IPA on Thursday and Beam Me Up Scotty returns Friday. Ponderosa is almost out of Hefeweizen, which means it will be time to put Tart Cherry Chocolate Porter on tap. Red Door has ESB ready to roll on Friday. Rio Bravo has a bevy of new beers including Hella Fine Pils, Blurred Lines (New England-style IPA), Sandia SMASH Watermelon Sour, and Old Firestone Pale Ale. Steel Bender brings back Homegrown Pils on Thursday. Tractor is feeling summery with Break Pointe Pale Ale.

Up in Santa Fe, Duel unveils Project 10, a Biere de Mars, on Friday.

Continue reading for all the news that is fit to blog for the week of May 21.

To break down each “capsule,” I listed the brewery (with Web page linked), its phone number and hours of operation. Under “Beers” are the new or seasonal beers on tap for this week.
