Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s seven breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, and one in Red River also joining the party.

We can all use some good beer news this week, and Bow & Arrow is here to provide it. The Sixth Street brewery is celebrating its third anniversary Saturday from noon to midnight. There will be a pop-up by Four Corners Navajo Tacos from noon to 4, followed by Curbside Pies. Red Mesa, with Spanish flamenco guitar player Reynaldo Baca, will provide the music from 5 to 7. Special merchandise will include commemorative glassware from illustrator Dale DeForest and Desert Revival T-shirts from Darko Printshop. Oh, and of course there will be special beers. Bottles of Desert Revival, a barrel-aged raspberry sour, will be for sale. There will also be special tappings of Dark Mesa Belgian Quad, Coyote Waits Imperial Molé Stout, and Rancho Bizarro Sour Red.

On the new beer front this week, there are a few options to check out. Bosque has Scale Tipper coming back in cans and on tap Thursday. Boxing Bear tapped Red Eye Lager and Hazy Featherweight IPA late last week. La Cumbre goes light and malty with Schwarzbier and big and malty on nitro with From Putin with Love. Nexus serves up some Mango Milkshake IPA. Red Door brings back New England IPA later this week. Steel Bender will have bottles of The Village Wit for sale Thursday. Toltec is feeling the holiday with Fake Love, a cherry/pomegranate kettle sour, and Sippin’ on the Bock of the Day, a collaboration with Turtle Mountain that will be on tap at both breweries.

Up in Santa Fe, Blue Corn flies in with more Gatekeeper IPA, this time with Galaxy hops.

OK, fine, Pepe the Mule counts as a beer, even though it is basically a Moscow Mule, but it was made with beer. Double Black is now on tap at all times, and that is a good thing.

Unbreakable Glass is a cream ale, while OASIS is a passionfruit Belgian blonde.

It has been a busy few months for the new brewery at 529 Adams St. NE, just south of Lomas. The most recent additions are, well, everything. That’s what happens with a 1-barrel brewhouse, the turnover is pretty constant, but it also means the beer is always fresh! Shut the Lights Black IPA is a collaboration with Ponderosa, which will be the guest brewery of the month for February.

The big beers are here as Imperial Stout and Barleywine join the lineup, replacing Oatmeal Stout and Brown Porter. Thurvaytha is a Mexican lager, not some sort of Viking ale. One is the Loneliest is an IPA with an IBU of, you guessed it, 1.

The most recent on-tap additions are Berry White, Amber Lager, Barrel-Aged Quadruple, Southside IPA, Prickly Pear Gose, Spruce Moose, a stout with spruce tips, and Coffee Porter. Before that came Sympathy for the Pork Chop, a smoked märzen, T. Gary Stout on nitro, named for Marble founder Ted Rice, and the Dupy’s Dunkel. Imperial Stout has all run out on tap, but four-pack cans are somehow still available (seriously, it’s delicious, get some!). You can also purchase cans of Imperial Red, Desert Fog, and NM State Fair Hazy Pale Ale in addition to enjoying them on tap.

Hot Chocolate Milk Stout was the most recent, and tasty, addition, but then along came Mango Milkshake IPA, which is pretty much the exact opposite end of the beer spectrum.

Beers: Hoppy Pilsner, Schwarzbier, Hop-Mosa Hazy IPA, ESB, Shut the Lights Black IPA. Shut the Lights, a collaboration with High and Dry, is the most recent addition, preceded by the ESB. There are a whole bunch of excellent beers on deck, including a Cocoa Puffs Baltic Porter.

Pining was made in collaboration with New Mexico Piñon Coffee, while Picture Rock was made in collaboration with Beer Creek Brewing. Raining Blood was a collaboration between the Crew’s Franz Solo and Red Door, a big imperial red with a strong hop profile. New England IPA will be back later this week.

The most recent additions were Copper Ale, Freak Juice, another New England-style IPA, and Beer Against Humanity, a new West Coast IPA, is available in cans at the brewery, soon to appear in distribution. It will ultimately replace the DRB and Snakebite IPAs.

News: Congratulations to Starr Brothers on becoming the first two-time winner of the Brew Crew’s annual Stout Challenge. Foggy Monocle, the 2017 champion, won again by the narrowest of margins, with 80 points (out of a possible 100) to the 77.5 for Marble’s Oatmeal Stout and the 76.5 for 2018 champion Dark ‘n Lusty from Canteen.

The most recent additions are the monstrous, and delicious, Round Midnight, plus the malty sweet Messages From Nowhere. A new batch of the Gatekeeper IPA has been brewed, this time with Galaxy hops.

The first two hard kombucha on tap are the Blanco, made with jasmine green tea pearls, ginger, and lemon, and the Flor, which takes all of those ingredients and adds some hibiscus. For the more traditional beer drinkers, there are guest taps featuring a rotating list from the likes of La Cumbre, Bosque, Turtle Mountain, Abbey, Rowley Farmhouse Ales, and Tumbleroot.

Before those came The Petit Blanche – Galaxy, as well as the version with Galaxy and apricots, and the Chantal, a French saison brewed in memory of a friend lost to cancer, with a portion of the proceeds going to the New Mexico Cancer Society. RFA has bottles of Sonora Weisse for sale, along with a new collaboration beer called Terrapin Transit, a strawberry and lime Berliner Weisse.

I recently got the opportunity to give a talk on New Mexico beer history at Red River. The brewery is a lovely space with great food and a friendly staff. My personal favorite among the beers was the Prospector Porter, but it has been temporarily replaced by Red Deception. The regular Bad Medicine is back on tap after the barrel-aged version finally ran dry.
