The Week Ahead in Beer: Multiple breweries welcome The Curse

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s eight breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.

Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.
Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.

Back in 2019, when pandemics were only in movies, there was a lovely emerging synergy between local breweries and The Curse, the main supporters group for New Mexico United. Well, as some might have noticed, the relationship between The Curse and Starr Brothers ended last summer (let us not rehash the why), leaving many folks wondering where fans would gather to watch road games this season. Sure, The Curse was still partnered with Brew Lab 101 in Rio Rancho, Hollow Spirits in Wells Park, Second Street Rufina in Santa Fe, and just added Bathtub Row in Los Alamos, but what about the most populous part of Albuquerque? That question has been answered as The Curse will be holding a season kickoff party inside the Santa Fe Brewing taproom at Tin Can Alley this Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m. This will become the official watch party site for fans in the Northeast Heights, starting with the season opener on the road May 1 versus Rio Grande Valley. For this Saturday, there will be merchandise, Curse membership signups, and of course plenty of beer from SFBC and food from the other Tin Can Alley vendors. We love that our breweries continue to be seen as the best possible partners for our state’s soccer team.

As for can releases this week, things seem a bit hoppy, with one big stout and a flavored cider thrown in for good measure. Bow & Arrow drops two this week, with Peanut Provisions, a salted peanut butter imperial stout, on Thursday, and Cactus Flats Hazy IPA with Sabro hops on Friday. Boxing Bear is getting Totally Cereal again with the return of its hazy IPA on Saturday. Canteen is raising money for charity with the six-pack release of Trail Angel Pale Ale this Thursday, which just happens to be Earth Day. Ex Novo has a limited supply of its Oregon flagship beer, Eliot IPA, now in stock in Corrales. Tractor brings back Rosé Cider in cans this Thursday.

On the new draft beer front this week, there some fresh options to check out for pints or crowler/growler fills. Casa Vieja doubles up with Blue X2 Blue Corn Ale. Differential resurrects A Year from Helles. Gravity Bound just tapped Easily Enticed, a Thai ice tea-inspired sour. High and Dry has more Pilsner Hardly Know Her and added Yellow Talon seltzer with kumquat. La Cumbre tapped some Spring Cream Ale. Marble added a new stout, Moose. Nexus brought back Bird of Prey IPA. Palmer just tapped a new Hazy IPA. Ponderosa should have Maibock available by this weekend. Rio Bravo is dreaming of vacation with Tropical Sunshine Hazy IPA. Sidetrack tries again with Further West IPA Version 2. Starr Brothers brings back Trolls in the Mist Hazy IPA. Thirsty Eye rolls out A Nice Little Brown Ale. Tractor will get you in the mood for some Mortal Kombat with Scorpion Hazy IPA coming out this Thursday. Turtle Mountain collaborated with Proximity Malts to create Cosmic Campground Black IPA, while also keeping things delectably dark with Stoutly Manner American Stout.

Up in Santa Fe, Second Street recently tapped its collaboration with the CNM brewing students and La Capilla Hop Farm, made with the first pelletized New Mexico-grown hops, and appropriately called it La Capilla Chinook Pale Ale. Tumbleroot thought up the appropriate beer for customers returning to the Agua Fria taproom, Patio Pale Ale. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row has more Anniversary Lager on draft. Down south, Truth or Consequences Brewing is feeling quite springy with Mango Bloom, a fruited wheat.

(WEEKEND UPDATES) There are a few new draft-only options around town. Bombs Away goes big with H-Bomb Hefe. La Cumbre brings back An Extra Slice of Hefen. Marble is getting a jump on the season with Summer Ale. Sidetrack rolls out the tasty Bounce to the ESBeat and MX Dark Lager. Sobremesa kneels before Queen’s Dream Strawberry Gose. Up in Santa Fe, Rowley Farmhouse Ales tapped Arbordale Belgian IPA.
