ABQ Beer Week: Everyone pucker up on Day One as sours take center stage

There’s plenty of variety in the events scheduled for Day One.

And, we’re back! ABQ Beer Week kicks off today (Thursday) with an actual kickoff party, plus a special tasting/tap takeover, a beer-and-cheese pairing, a beer dinner, a fundraiser, and more. Let’s get right to it, shall we?

Featured Event

Every day we will pick what we consider the biggest, most interesting, most unique event. This does not mean you should go to only this event and ignore the rest. All of them deserve your attention, but realistically, you can probably only attend a few. So we will make our daily pick, and you can either jump on it, or declare the Crew is foolish (we kinda are) and pick your own.

What: Sour Hour with Rowley Farmhouse Ales. Where: Tractor Wells Park. When: 5-10 p.m. Cost: No cover charge.

Details: Heading on down to Wells Park for the return of this crowd favorite event. For $15, you get a sampler tray of three sour ales from RFA — Supernatant (Fruited Berliner Weisse), Germophile – Prickly Pear, Elder Millennial (Brett Pale) — and the Blueberry Berliner Weisse from Tractor. John Rowley will be giving a talk about the beers at 6 p.m., and you can also purchase 12-ounce pours of your favorite(s).

Why you should go: Get an education with your sour sampling. It’s never too late to learn new things!

All the other great events

What: Beer Week Kickoff. Where: Bubba’s 33, 4861 Pan American Fwy. When: 4-7 p.m. Cost: No cover charge. Details: Stop by for $4 pints of Alaskan Brewing beers, plus you can enter a Blues & Brews VIP contest, and there will be other additional giveaways and prizes. Why you should go: Free swag, maybe Smoked Porter on tap (no guarantees, but it would be nice), and you can get something to eat before heading to the other events.

What: Bell’s Sampling. Where: Total Wine Uptown. When: 4-6 p.m. Cost: No cover charge. Details: Samples of Bell’s finest beers will be poured for you to enjoy. Why you should go: If you need one more six-pack for your weekend BBQ gathering, this is a good way to figure out which one you need to buy.

What: Pint Night with Friends of the Valle De Oro. Where: Canteen Brewhouse. When: 5-9 p.m. Cost: No cover charge. Details: Grab some beers and listen to Silver Skye Blues Band on the patio, with a portion of the proceeds going to help the wildlife refuge south of Albuquerque. Why you should go: All of the NM wilderness needs help right now, and doing your part for this slice of it is as easy as ordering your favorite Canteen beer.

What: Beer, Cheese and More. Where: Marble Heights. When: 6-7 p.m. Cost: $30. Details: Well, this one sold out about as fast as we expected it would. For those going, enjoy a tray of Marble beers paired with specially selected cheeses and other munchies. Why you should go: If you got a ticket, you know how much fun, and how tasty of an event this is every time it’s held. Enjoy!

What: Steel Bender Beer Dinner. Where: Seared Bistro. When: 6 p.m. Cost: $60. Details: The time to RSVP has come and gone, so if you paid for a seat, you enjoy those unique combinations from a four-course meal by Seared paired with some of Steel Bender’s best beers. Why you should go: Well, if you did not get a ticket, you will have to wait until the next beer pairing meal, which we are sure will be happening with greater frequency in the future.

What: Geeks Who Drink. Where: Salt Yard West, 3700 Ellison Dr. NW. When: 7 p.m. Cost: No cover charge. Details: It’s your favorite bar trivia, now with bigger prizes! How big? Try $200 for first place and $100 for second. Why you should go: We can all use a little extra money, right?
