Greetings fellow beer snobs, my name is E-Rock and I am here this unseasonably warm Monday, as I am nearly every Monday, to keep you current on all of the seasonal beers, music, and events served up in and around the greater Albuquerque metro area.
With some very notable exceptions, this week does not bring many new beers to Burque. However, the beers that are being released include some local favorites as well as some interesting new additions to the locally brewed pantheon. Back Alley Draft House is tapping two new beers by Goat Head Brewery, including the TuRtle Tongue Double Pumpkin and the Capra IPA. Broken Bottle is unleashing the Rob Van Winkle Vanilla Stout. Chama River has brought back their Bonus Czech Pilsner after a few months of slumber. La Cumbre has brought back their local favorite Witch’s Tit as well as a new Organic Pale Ale. Il Vicino has a new batch of the Koa Coconut Porter on tap. Marble has rechristened their Red Light Lager as the No Shoe Brew. Turtle Mountain has a new batch of Cherry Wheat on tap.
That is just a small sample of what is going on in the 505. Continue reading for all the news that is fit to blog for the week of October 8.

To break down each “capsule,” I listed the brewery (with Web page linked), its phone number (all are area code 505, for out-of-state readers) and hours of operation. Under “Beers” are the new or seasonal beers on tap for this week. And for those breweries that play host to musicians, I made sure to list who’s on the week’s set list.
ABQ Brew Pub — 884-1116
(Mon–Thurs 11 a.m.–midnight, Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–2 a.m., Sunday 10 a.m.–midnight)

The Zombie IPA is a favorite among BAB’s patrons, so it tends to run out fast. Enjoy this fresh batch while you have the chance.
Events: Speaking of zombies, BAB will now be screening the new season of The Walking Dead starting this Sunday at 7 p.m., so drop by, check out the new food menu, grab a pint of the Zombie IPA, and get your TV zombie fix as well.

Beers: Bonus Czech (Pilsner), Chinook Pale Ale (6.0% ABV), Hopslap, El Hefe. Chama River is bringing back the Bonus Czech. With the on-again, off-again warm weather that we’ve been experiencing in the 505 lately, this refreshing pilsner will give you another opportunity to relive summer before the cold sets in.
Il Vicino Brewing Canteen — 881-2737
(Sun–Thurs noon–10 p.m., Fri–Sat noon–midnight)
Beers: Coconut Porter, Hop Bam Boom Double IPA, Exodus IPA, Cascade Pale Ale, Dunkel Hefe, Crystalweisen (filtered hefeweisen), Dark Matter (Black) Pilsner, India Pale Lager, Saison D’Gaul. The Double IPA is back on tap at the Canteen. According to Il Vicino’s Facebook page, this Double IPA is “not the ever-popular Elsa’s, but it is this year’s entry for the Alpha King Challenge. It’s so good it’ll make you say a whop bop-a-lu a HOP bam boom … Seriously that’s the name!” Some times I think IV’s brew staff is having too much fun, but with the all of the great beers they brew, who can blame them?
News: The Chile Stout is on tap for Cask Wednesday and the Double IPA will be on cask Saturday.
Music: Tues — Alex Maryol (Acoustic Blues) 6-9 p.m., Sun — I’ll Drink to That w/ Logan Phillips, Andrea Serrano, Damien Flores, Richard Vargas, Leah Black, Keith Sanchez, Love and Whiskey, Jesus Lucero, and Danielle Flemming (Poetry/Variety) 3-6 p.m.

It’s time for a little house cleaning at La Cumbre. The 1/2 Nelson Pale Ale will soon be replaced by the seasonal favorite Witch’s Tit, while the VMO #3 will soon be replaced by an Organic Pale Ale. If you haven’t dropped by La Cumbre recently, this week is the perfect time to do so.

Beers: Irish Red Ale, Smoked Milk Stout, Pale Ale, Hefeweizen. Mickey C’s Hefeweizen was brewed with just grains and hops in honor of Oktoberfest. It is much drier and a bit stronger of a beer than their normal honey wheat.
News: Mickey C’s IPA and the Double Pilsner will be on tap very soon.
Nexus Brewery — 242-4100
(Mon–Thurs 2 p.m.–10 p.m., Fri–Sun 11 a.m.–midnight)
Beers: Equinox Spiced Brown (starting Friday), Sandia Watermelon Wheat. The Sandia Watermelon Wheat is a solid wheat beer with a very subtle taste. According to owner Ken Carson, this first batch of Sandia came out more subtle than he hoped for, so expect newer batches to have stronger watermelon flavor. Stoutmeister and I sampled the first batch. Even though it wasn’t quite what Nexus had hoped for, we found it to be a tasty and drinkable wheat.
Events: Nexus is introducing new fall specials including $3 pints on Monday and Tuesday, and six of their famous Southern Fried Wings for only $5 on Sunday and Monday. As always, Nexus plays host to the Young, Dumb, and Full of Comedy open mic on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Sunroom.
Music: Thurs — Washboard Road Band 6 p.m., Sat — Chava & the Paid My Dues Band 6 p.m., Sun — Smooth Jazz noon.
Tractor Brewing Company — 433-5654 (Nob Hill Tap Room)
(The tap room opens most days around 3 p.m. and stays open as late as 2 a.m.; it opens earlier on weekends)
Beers: Tractoberfest, Rye IPA, Sticky Fingers Brown Ale, Scotch Ale, Hang Me Out To Dry Cider. The Sticky Fingers Brown Ale is a new addition to Tractor’s menu (not to be confused with their “Nut What You Think” Brown Ale, which was recently on tap). It offers up a singular, still somewhat nutty flavor, as opposed to the multiple, strange flavors of the prior brown ale.
News: The Black IPA, Black Lager, and Beer Noir Month are coming soon. Yes, Stoutmeister is more than a little excited for this event.
Turtle Mountain Brewing Company — 994-9497
(Kitchen hours: Mon–Thurs 11 a.m.-9 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–9:30 p.m., Sun 11 a.m.–8:30 p.m.)
Beers: Cherry Wheat, Oktoberfest, Harvest Ale, Amnesia IPA, “Dark Knight” Maduro Stout, Hophead Red, Hybrid IPA, Cabo Lager, PNB Brown, 80/80, Red Rye, Hybrid IPA on cask. The Harvest Ale is made with fresh hops, and The Dark Knight Maduro Stout was brewed to coincide with Santa Ana Star Center’s production of Batman Live which will be running from Oct. 17-21. Stay tuned for more information regarding the upcoming collaborative events between TMBC and Santa Ana Star Center (which may or may not include the Batmobile). Stoutmeister tried the Oktoberfest (“dry, but drinkable”) and the Maduro Stout (“burly, smoked flavor, but not too thick”) on a recent visit.
News: Matheson, TMBC’s head brewer, will bring his Avalon Red wine to the brewery for special tastings next week. Stay tuned for more info.
