And so it begins!

It’s a big day, but if you would rather go small, there are some events besides Blues & Brews.

The biggest event of ABQ Beer Week is today when Blues & Brews kicks off at 2 p.m. for VIP, 3 p.m. for general admission. We already covered what to expect from the humongous festival, but feel free to go back and reread it to better plan your afternoon. However, we know not everyone is going there (or to BearFest on the west side; we will have a separate preview for that as it is not technically an official ABW event). So to help you out, here are some other options for your afternoon/evening.

Today’s smaller lineup includes a beer/food/movie pairing, a multi-media entertainment event, an ongoing anniversary party, and a special tapping. There is also a bike tour, though it has already sold out.

Featured event

Every day we will pick what we consider the biggest, most interesting, most unique event. This does not mean you should go to only this event and ignore the rest. All of them deserve your attention, but realistically, you can probably only attend a few. So we will make our daily pick, and you can either jump on it, or declare the Crew is foolish (we kinda are) and pick your own.

What: Old World/New World Beer Paired Lunch & Movie. Where: Shade Tree Customs & Cafe and Guild Cinema. When: Noon. Cost: $35 includes a three-course lunch, old world/new world beer pairings, and the movie; lunch only is $30, and movie only is $10.

Details: Planned menu and pairings, provided to us this past Tuesday — 1) Pinkus Hefe-Weisen versus La Cumbre A Slice of Hefen, paired with a goat cheese, roasted beets, toasted almonds, and baby beet greens salad; 2) Samuel Smith IPA versus La Cumbre Elevated IPA, paired with a Southwest patty melt served with bitterballen; 3) Lindemans Cuvee Rene versus La Cumbre Strawberry Gose, paired with sea-salted chocolate. The movie is the Albuquerque premier of Crafting a Nation next door at the Guild.

Why you should go: It’s a beer smack-down AND a movie premier! Paul from La Cumbre and Tom from Merchant du Vin will be there to help you understand the beers a little better. And since it starts at noon, you can still make it for the general admission portion of Blues & Brews.

All the other great events

What: Nexus Fourth Anniversary Party. Where: Nexus Brewery. When: 11 a.m. to close. Cost: No cover charge. Details: The party continues with more of the special red chile BBQ ribs and the Prosperity Works Belgian Scottish. Why you should go: If the big crowds Saturday scared you away, now is your chance to grab some brunch or dinner.

What: Bike & Brew Tour. Where: All over the place. When: 1 p.m. Cost: $45 with bike rental, $40 if you bring your own bike. Details: Sadly, it’s sold out, but there will be another special tour of multiple ABQ-area breweries by bicycle on May 31. Why you should go: Get some exercise with your beer, but if you didn’t get a ticket yet, you’ll have to aim for next week. You can find more information here.

What: I’ll Drink to That. Where: Tractor Wells Park. When: 4 p.m. Cost: No cover charge. Details: Tractor’s Carlos Contreras will host an evening of spoken word, slam poetry, live music, and more. National Slam Champion Ed Mabrey will be featured, while Leah Leyva & The Band will perform, and the Desert Darlings will handle the belly dancing. Why you should go: Kick back and relax after Blues & Brews. Let others do the entertaining.

What: Canteen Special Tapping. Where: Two Fools Tavern. When: 5 p.m. Cost: No cover charge. Details: The Canteenator Doppelbock will be the featured beer. Why you should go: Devour some delicious food after the festival and enjoy a quality local beer.
