Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s six breweries, one in Los Alamos, and one in Moriarty also joining the party.
Cinco de Mayo, or Drinko de Mayo, is this Friday, just in case you had not checked the calendar in a while. It is a holiday I usually sit out, not because I dislike it or anything, but it falls the day after my birthday, so my hangover tends to keep me grounded. This year, though, the breweries are putting out some unique new beers for the holiday that might just get me off the couch. Boese Brothers will be throwing a party for the re-release of Cherry Bomb, their popular summer wheat beer. There will be an art show by Quetzal, food from Disk-O-Dawg, and live music from Dos Gatos. That all kicks off at 7 p.m. Bow & Arrow is going a darker route with El Breakfast Stout. It is a Mexican chocolate version of the popular coffee stout genre, and will be available all day. Ponderosa is bring back its ever popular Spanglish, the Mexican/American hybrid lager, and it will also be available all day. Rio Bravo and Lizard Tail are releasing their new collaboration, an imperial German Kolsch, Funf de Mayo, which likewise will be available all day at both breweries. Duel is having quite the event at its Albuquerque taproom. The downtown location will have Cinco de Cezzanne starting at 5 p.m., with the new Origine spring saison alongside all four seasonal saisons from last year. Marble does not have a new beer release, but it does have Crave, a pop-up beer dinner in its fermentation hall downtown on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. Chef David Gaspar De Alba of Artichoke Cafe is creating a four-course meal paired with four special Marble beers. Tickets are available at the taproom and cost $60 for the general public and $55 for brew club members.
On the new beer front this week, there are a few other new options to check out. Boese Brothers also has Betchin Pale Ale available. Bosque goes dark, and light, with Mumbai Night Sessions, a session black IPA. Canteen has fresh batches of Sundance Kolsch, Raspberry Wheat, and the new Super Smalls Session IPA. Flix Brewhouse rolls out Flora Colossus, a special new double IPA. Marble has a slew of new, with Bronco Blanco IPA, Saison De Burque, Indian Bone’s Raider of the Lost Ale, Pina Pale, and Josh Bullard, the collaboration with Bosque. Nexus brings back the popular Blood Orange Worf-a-weizen, and Vienna Lager should be on tap later this week. Ponderosa’s Vienna Lager is also available after a long wait. Starr Brothers introduces Johnny, a cashmere IPA. The new Misfitter Altbier and Goose is Loose Berliner Weisse are now at Steel Bender. Turtle Mountain unveils Stuccon Saison, and Can’t Catch Me Copper Lager will soon be back to join the main beer lineup.
Up in Santa Fe, Rowley Farmhouse Ales has a fresh batch of Erin Go Bragh Dry Irish Stout on nitro, while Germophile, a new Berliner weisse, debuts today (Wednesday). Second Street has fresh batches of Coffee Porter, Boneshaker Bitter, and Pivotal IPA.
