The Week Ahead in Beer: We give thanks for the onslaught of local stouts

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s eight breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.

Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.
Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.

International Stout Day was back on November 5, but “In-State Stout Week” might as well be right now. There’s a lot of stouts coming in can and (maybe) bottle form this week, which is just leaving us extra thankful. Bow & Arrow pushed back the release of Chocolate Para Mesa Imperial Stout to Wednesday. Made with ancho chiles, cacao nibs, cloves, and Ceylon cinnamon, this beautiful beer will be in four-pack cans to help you get through this socially-distanced Thanksgiving. If you want more sweet and less spice, head over to Rio Bravo for cans of Chocoholic Double Chocolate Stout, which also comes out Wednesday. Over at Boxing Bear, they are once again putting the “black” in Black Friday, with the return of Vantablack Russian Imperial Stout in cans. Oh, but that is not all, as Drink the Rich Imperial Stout will also debut in cans. The newcomer was brewed with lactose, brown sugar, vanilla, and cacao nibs. Meanwhile, Steel Bender will have a short run of cans of the barrel-aged version of Track Suit Stout on Friday. Made without adjuncts and then aged in maple bourbon barrels, this collaboration with our friend Majin Garcia is definitely worth grabbing instead of standing in line at Wal-Mart or Target. On top of all that, we have learned that Quarter Celtic has pulled some 2016 Irish Handcuffs out of the archives, and is planning to bottle the barrel-aged version. When we learn of the details, we will pass it along. After we grab our fair share, of course.

On the new beer front this week, there some other fresh options of a non-stout variety to check out for crowler/growler fills and in cans. (UPDATE) Bosque will have six-pack cans of Pickle Down Economics this Wednesday, and it is now a year-round beer. Bow & Arrow will also release a new version of its foeder-aged saison, Curio with Sumac Berries, in bottles this Friday. Brew Lab 101 is feeling festive with its Merry Cranberry Cider available for growler fills. Ex Novo keeps things light with the return of Coorales Light for crowler/growler fills. (UPDATE) Marble has more cans of Mountain Fog Hazy DIPA. (UPDATE) Turtle Mountain is releasing Spiced Rusticana Brown Ale on Thursday.

Up in Santa Fe, things are quiet this week. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row has more Stouty McStoutface on tap for crowler/growler fills. Down south, Little Toad Creek has put its classic Pendejo Porter in cans.

As for alterations to hours this week with Thanksgiving, we know every brewery will be closed that day. (UPDATE: It turns out that Turtle Mountain will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for beer sales only, while Red River will open from 3 to 8 p.m. for beer, spirits, and food to-go orders.) Others with extended closures include Boese Brothers through Monday, La Reforma on Friday, and Ponderosa through Sunday. Boxing Bear will also be extending their hours until 8 p.m. for both Wednesday and Friday. (MORE UPDATES) Tractor will be open Wednesday from 1 to 7 p.m. at Wells Park and Westside only. We can also report that Boxing Bear will be temporarily closing its downtown taproom after Wednesday. Starr Brothers, on the other hand, will reopen for beer and merchandise to-go sales starting Wednesday, and then Friday and Saturday from 3 to 8 p.m.

Continue reading for all the news that is fit to blog for the week of November 23.

To break down each “capsule,” I listed the brewery (with Web page linked), its phone number and hours of operation. Instead of “Beers” being an all-encompassing list of seasonal/specialty offerings, we are now splitting everything into “Draft/Crowler/Growler Fills” for beers poured from the taps, and “Cans/Bottles” for pre-packaged beers. All beers listed are subject to change.
