Greetings New Mexico craft beer lovers, this is E-Rock, back to bring you this installment of The Week Ahead in Beer. This column is hand-crafted to keep you up to date on all of the seasonal beers, news, and events served up at breweries and taprooms in New Mexico.
It might be winter in the Land of Enchantment, but local breweries are already preparing for warmer weather by releasing an assortment of new pale ales, reds, and IPAs. So bundle up and check out the pale ales now on tap at La Cumbre and Turtle Mountain, or sample the new reds on tap at La Cumbre and Santa Fe Brewing Company. You can even pretend it’s summer and hold your own IPA challenge with new entries from Bosque, Il Vicino, Kaktus, and Nexus. With so many great beers on tap, there’s no reason to let the weather get you down.
Right now in the Duke City, Bosque is serving their new Imperial Wheat IPA, and they should have their Nestordamus Belgian Dark Strong on tap by the end of the week. A fresh batch of Sasquatch Scotch is back on tap at the Il Vicino Canteen, and on Thursday the Canteen will have a Citra dry-hopped IPA on cask. Kaktus just tapped a new IPA called Hop Donkey IPA. This week La Cumbre will be tapping Red Ryeot as well as releasing it in bottles. In addition, they will be tapping their Southern Cross Pale Ale, brewed with five different Southern Hemisphere hops. Nexus’ Simcoe Session IPA will be on tap later this week. Turtle Mountain has new batches of Grandma’s Brown and Triple Play Pale Ale now on tap.
In the City Different, Santa Fe Brewing Company’s Irish Red Ale is officially on tap and on the shelf in cans. Also, SFBC’s Small Batch Saturday features Bill’s Dopplebock, a German-style dark lager. Second Street Brewery is now serving a new batch of Outlier Special Bitter.

ABQ Brew Pub — (505) 884-1116

Beers: Petrus Aged Ale, Petrus Aged Red. Petrus Aged Ale and Red are high alcohol barrel-aged sours from a family owned brewery in Flanders. Several times a year ABP serves up the latest creation by local brewing hero and winner of the Samuel Adams Longshot competition, Ben Miller, or seasonal releases by Monks Brewing.
Back Alley Draft House — (505) 766-8590

Beers: All of Back Alley’s house beers have been cleaned out! Luckily, BADH is brewing at max capacity so they have all four back on tap soon. Until then, BADH just tapped Stone’s Matt’s Burning Rosids, an imperial saison brewed in tribute to Matt Courtright, and they are still offering Lips of Faith Cigar City, Stone Double Bastard, Deschutes Hop Henge Imperial IPA, and the Rogue XS Old Crustacean Barley Wine on tap.
Blue Corn Brewery — (505) 438-1800

Beers: Kamikaze Ace, Bankrupt Brown (Imperial Brown), Plaza Porter, Barrel Series #2. Kamikaze Ace, an Imperial Pilsner hopped up with Sorachi Ace and clocking in at 8.7-percent, will be hitting the taps at the end of the week. Barrel Series #2 is a Brett Russian Imperial Stout aged in bourbon barrels.
News: Blue Corn is currently serving a rotating Nitro beer.
Blue Heron Brewery — (505) 579-9188

Beers: La Llorona Scottish Ale, Lava Rock Pale Ale, Blue Heron Blonde, Tarantula Trek Red Ale, Aurora IPA. The lineup is unchanged from last week, but considering the quality of the five beers on tap, that’s more than OK. Blue Heron also has Prieta Real Imperial Stout, La Llorona, Lava Rock, Amber’s Folly Amber Ale, and Aurora IPA for sale in bombers.
Bosque Brewing Company — (505) 750-7596

Beers: Nestordamus Belgian Dark Strong, Imperial Wheat IPA, Mellow Brit, Amarillo Red, Pale Ryder, Oatmeal Stout. Bosque should have their Nestordamus Belgian Dark Strong on tap by the end of the week. The new Amarillo Red uses Amarillo hops to balance out a smooth, sweet red ale. Not surprisingly, Stoutmeister gives thumbs up to the Oatmeal Stout, which he described as “big and bold, almost like a hybrid of a dry stout and an oatmeal. It’s not for wimps.”
News: Bosque’s new brewing equipment has arrived, and they have started moving equipment into the new brew space. They expect their expanded brewery and new taproom to be in place in the near future.
Bosque has a happy hour running from 4-6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and all day on Sunday. Look for a revamped menu and get $1 off your favorite pints.
Broken Bottle Brewery — (505) 890-8777

Beers: Sickle and Hammer Imperial Red (8.0% ABV), Rosemary’s Baby (4.3% ABV, a rosemary porter), End of Days Tripel, Cracked Cork Barley Wine (11% ABV), Anamole Stout. Both the Tripel and the Barley Wine are being served in 10-ounce glasses due to their high alcohol content.
Events: B3 has $3 beers every Tuesday from open to close. On Wednesday, B3 will be hosting their open mic from 8-10 p.m., with signups starting at 7:30 p.m. Check out B3’s karaoke night every Thursday starting at 8 p.m. B3 will have live music Friday Featuring John Allen at 8 p.m. and Saturday featuring Brandon Gomez at 8 p.m.
Cazuela’s Seafood & Mexican Grill — (505) 994-9364

Beers: Cabrocito (Pale Ale), Papa Cabra (Double IPA), Acapulco Red, Panama Red, Acapulco Gold (Mexican Lager) (5.2% ABV), Hefe Weizen (5.5% ABV), Robusto Porter (5.9% ABV), Chupacabra IPA (7.2% ABV), Pastizal Oatmeal Stout (5.5% ABV), Piedra del Fuego Stoned Cream Ale (5.0% ABV), ESB (5.2%). First there was the Chupacabra IPA, then Papa Cabra Double IPA, and now Cazuela’s is pleased to announce the arrival of the newest addition to the Cabra family, the Cabrocito Pale Ale. Try them all. Stoutmeister and I had a chance to sample the Piedra del Fuego Stoned Cream Ale, which we both recommend. According to Cazuela’s menu: “This cream ale uses red-hot stones to super caramelize the sugars, creating a nutty, toffee-like flavor.” Brandon tried Panama Red at NM Brew Fest and recommends this slightly hoppy red ale.
Events: Cazuela’s now features a live guitarist every Friday.
Chama River Brewing Company — (505) 342-1800

Beers: Union Jackalope (5.8% ABV, 65 IBU), Shadow Boxer (6.5% ABV, 65 IBU), Son of Slap (4.9%ABV, 40 IBU), Serenity Milk Stout (5.5% ABV, 20 IBU). Chama had this to say about Union Jackalope: “Our British-style IPA has flavors and aromas of earthy, spicy, and down-right tasty East Kent Golding hops as well as a rounded caramel backbone to create the perfectly balanced beer.” Chama also had this to say about Son of Slap: “AKA Hop-Tap, this session pale ale continues the legacy of its bigger, stronger, and notorious ancestor “Hop-Slap!” Brewed with similar malt and hop varieties as its predecessor, this ale has less alcohol with the same refreshingly dry finish and hop forward flavor.”
Comanche Creek Brewing Company — (575) 377-2337

Beers: Touch-Me-Not IPA, Deadman Pale Ale, Homestead Amber Ale. According to Comanche Creek’s website: “Touch-Me-Not IPA is a tantalizing American style IPA flavored with Chinook, Centennial and Cascade hops. This bold IPA is named for the majestic mountain that overlooks our brewery!” Homestead Amber Ale was on hand when Stoutmeister and I visited Comanche Creek in 2012. The Homestead is often bottled and served at establishments in the Eagle Nest/Angel Fire area.
Duel Brewing Company — (505) 474-5301

Beers: Goya Stout (13.6% ABV), Manikin (Scottish ale, 3.9% ABV), Titian (Belgian golden strong ale, 8.2% ABV), Grunewald (imperial porter, 12% ABV), Dark Ryder (Belgian strong dark ale, 11% ABV), Bad Amber (Belgian amber, 6% ABV), Fiction IPA, Non-Fiction Pale Ale. Duel describes the Goya Stout (13.6% ABV) thusly: “Smokey pear on the nose. Ethereal mouth feel. A true journey for all the senses!”
News: Duel is trying to have music at least Thurs-Sat (usually 7-10 p.m.), their food menu just expanded with three new items, and they have a life drawing session each Sunday morning from 11-1 (although they are not open to the drinking public till 1 p.m. on Sun).
Events: The life drawing session is $25. You get the beverage of your choice, a Brussels-style waffle made with their own yeast and beer and then served with a Grunewald Syrup. Everyone then draws from a nude model. People can sign up through the website or call the brewery to reserve a spot.
Eske’s Brew Pub — (575) 758-1517

Beers: Rio Red Ale, Naked Apricot Ale, Green Chile IPA, Chemist Ale, Seco Stout, Blonde Betty. The Green Chile IPA got a big write-up in the Albuquerque Journal‘s revamped Friday entertainment section. The Chemist Ale is one of the few gluten-free beer brewed in New Mexico.
High Desert Brewing Company — (575) 525-6752
(Mon–Sat 11 a.m.–midnight, Sun noon-10 p.m.)
Beers: Wheat Ale, Peach Wheat, Extra Special Bitter, IPA, Steam, Anniversary IPA, Dark Bock, Octoberfest, Stout, Imperial Stout, Barley Wine. The Steam and Anniversary IPA are new to the lineup this week. Stoutmeister and Franz Solo sampled some HDBC beers at WinterBrew. They recommend the Dark Bock, in particular. High Desert Brewing Company is located at 1201 W. Hadley Ave. in Las Cruces.
Il Vicino Brewing Canteen — (505) 881-2737
(Sun–Thurs noon–10 p.m., Fri–Sat noon–midnight)
Beers: Sasquatch Scotch, HBC-291-IPA, Exodus IPA, Summer Pale Ale, English Brown Porter, Operation Black Hops, Just Esteem, Irish Red Ale. HBC-291-IPA is from the Canteen’s experimental hop series. Sasquatch Scotch and Exodus IPA are back on tap at the Canteen. Both beers are local favorite seasonals that make their way to taps several times a year.
Cask: Thursday, the Canteen will have a Citra dry-hopped IPA on cask.
News: The Canteen has a new calendar in stock that is selling at $12. It features lots of photos, antics, and craziness, as well as beer facts from around the world, and scheduled events and releases at the Canteen.
Kaktus Brewing — (505) 379-5072
(Hours Mon-Thu 11:30-8, Fri-Sun 11:30-10)
Beers: Hop Donkey IPA, IPA, Traditional Bock, American Wheat, Helles Lager, Winter Ale, ESB, Late Hop Amber, Stout. Located at 471 South Hill Road in Bernalillo, Kaktus is the state’s newest brewery. It is a small, casual place, similar to Blue Heron in appearance and comfort factor. We already did a review of Kaktus and Stoutmeister highly recommends the ESB. Kaktus owner Dana Koller said fans can expect the nanobrewery to go through its most popular styles quickly, though they will always have something new and exciting available as a replacement.
Cask: Kaktus is now serving their ESB on cask.
News: Kaktus has a new winterized patio covered by a tent, so now you can enjoy a pint on the patio any time of year.
Events: On Saturday from 4-6 p.m., Kaktus will be doing a $2.5 pint happy hour with live music.
Kaktus hosts live music by original song writers every Monday night from 6-8 p.m., and they are also offering $3 pints every Monday.
La Cumbre Brewing — (505) 872-0225

Beers: Red Ryeot, Southern Cross Pale Ale, Full Pint Pale Ale (a collaboration with Oskar Blues), No, You’re a Dort, Cafe Con Leche. This week La Cumbre will be tapping Red Ryeot as well as releasing it in bottles. In addition, they will be tapping their Southern Cross Pale Ale, brewed with five different Southern Hemisphere hops.
News: Look for the new Red Ryeot, Project Dank, and Cafe Con Leche bottles at your local stores. A Slice of Hefen 16 oz. cans are also on store shelves. Malpais Stout is next, hopefully some time this month.
Little Toad Creek Brewery & Distillery — (575) 956-6144
(Open Wednesday through Monday (closed Tuesday) from 11 a.m.-11 p.m., staying open late on Friday/Saturday.)
Beers: Helles Lager, IPA, Amber Ale, Robust Porter, Oatmeal Stout. These are all beers in the regular rotation. I will add seasonal brews as I learn about them.
Events: LTC will host live music by Iya Khan at 8 p.m. on Friday.
Marble Brewery — (505) 243-2739
(Mon–Sat 1 p.m.–midnight, Sun 1 p.m.–10:30 p.m.)
Beers: Azacca Pale Ale, Abbey Darkness, Tripel, Double White, Imperial Red, Imperial Stout, Reserve Ale. Azacca is an experimental hop that imparts the Azacca Pale Ale citrus notes balanced by a subtle earthiness. Abbey Darkness is a Belgian-inspired strong, dark ale featuring fruity aromatics with a dried fruit and caramelized sugar palate. (8.7% ABV, $5.50 16oz Goblet) This year’s batch of Imperial Stout finds a nice balance between the bourbon flavors from the barrels and the strong stout base, or so says Stoutmeister, who has already gone by multiple times to enjoy this powerful elixir. He also recommends the Imperial Red, which is not as overly hopped as years past.

News: Stout Americano will be released Wednesday, Feb. 12 for the INDULGE party. They will have gift packs and featured chocolates. 111 Farmhouse will be released on March 5. Stay tuned for more information.
Mimbres Valley Brewing Company — (575) 544-2739 (Deming)

Beers: Liquid Nap, Belgian Wit, Silver Spike IPA, Beer Goggles, New England Hard Cider. Liquid Nap is a Belgian Style Tripel. While being a strong beer, it is sneaky smooth. Hard Ciders have grown increasingly popular in recent years, yet they are still pretty hard to find on-tap. The MVB Hard Cider is brewed with apples, brown sugar, and honey and has a high ABV of 8 percent. Because of the high alcohol content, the Hard Cider is served in 10-ounce glasses only. This dry cider is different from most other ciders. Mimbres Valley has a brewery in Deming and a taproom in Las Cruces. Both locations feature $7 tasting flights, and both locations carry the brews listed above.

Beers: Imperial Stout, RyePA, IPA, X Hop Pale, Brown. I am told that the Imperial Stout is well worth the trip to Las Vegas. Business has been nuts over at NMCBC, so beers are changing out rapidly on tap.
News: NMCBC’s new pub, The Old Town Draft House in Las Vegas, is open for business. They have 10 NMCBC taps and some cider. At least for a while, their hours are high noon until close, seven days a week.
Nexus Brewery — (505) 242-4100
(Sun–Thurs 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–midnight)
Beers: Simcoe Session IPA (4.8% ABV), Barley Wine, Imperial Stout, English Pale, Chocolate Porter, Imperial Cream. Nexus’ Simcoe Session IPA will be on tap later this week. Imperial Cream is high in alcohol content and flavor. It is one of my favorite beers and pairs well with chicken and cornbread waffles when you are up for a decadent brunch.
Events: Nexus serves up Happy Hour All Day on Tuesday featuring $3 pints. Also on Tuesday, Nexus will be hosting their comedy open mic, Young Dumb and Full of Comedy, starting at 7:30 p.m. in the Sun Room.
Roosevelt Brewing — (575) 226-2739

Beers: Eleanor’s Blonde Ale (5.5% ABV, 21 IBU), Portales Pale Ale (5.5% ABV, 45 IBU), Clovis Point IPA, Dirt Town Brown Ale (4.0% ABV, 23 IBU), Happy Heifer Hefeweizen (4.9% ABV, 17 IBU), Big Stick Stout, Cole Espresso Porter. Roosevelt Brewing is located at 201 S. Main Street in Portales. Our own Porter Pounder stopped by while working on a film crew that was shooting in Portales and reviewed several of Roosevelt’s beers.
Events: Wednesday night is Open Mic Night at Roosevelt Brewing.
Sandia Chile Grill — (505) 798-1970

Beers: Red, Rattlesnake IPA, Rio Negro Milk Stout (7.6% ABV), Barb’s Barrel Hefeweisen (5.5% ABV), Gold Rush Pilsen (6.8% ABV). The current batch of Rio Negro Milk Stout offers up a unique hybrid of the creamy milk stout and more of an Irish dry stout. And a big welcome back to the Gold Rush, a medal winner at the New Mexico Cup last year.
News: Sandia Chile Grill will be helping Desert Water Winery and Brewery open soon just outside Artesia.
Santa Fe Brewing Company — (505) 424-3333

Beers: Irish Red, Bill’s Dopplebock, Black IPA, Saison ’88. This week, Small Batch Saturday features Bill’s Dopplebock, a German Style Dark Lager. SFBC’S Irish Red Ale is officially on tap and on the shelf. The Saison ’88 was brewed in honor of SFBC’s 25th anniversary. It is also available for sale in cans just about everywhere you can find SFBC products.
Events: $1 Off Growler Refills in the Tasting Room on Mondays. $2 Tuesdays at the Eldorado Taphouse. On Wednesday, there is a $2 Pint Special in the SFBC Tasting Room, and the Sangre de Cristo Craft Brewers’ Meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Tasting Room as well. On Thursday, there will be $1 Off Growler Refills at the Eldorado Taphouse.
News: SFBC is purchasing a 7.5-acre farm in Northern New Mexico where they will begin growing their own hops. SFBC has also purchased property adjacent to the brewery with plans to eventually expand brewing operations from 30,000 barrels per year to 200,000 barrels.

Beers: Outlier Special Bitter, Kolsch, IPA, Rod’s Best Bitter, Halifax Strong Pale Ale, Tres Equis, Brown Ale. The Halifax is nearly out, so hurry over soon before it is gone. New to taps this week is a second batch of the Outlier Special Bitter. Arriving soon is a British Mild, which will be the featured beer for Cask & Curry Night on Feb. 13. Further down the line look for a new version of the Winter Warmer brewed with the same Ringwood yeast as the Outlier. The Brown Ale is the first in a series of browns for February.
Events: Ben Wright will be hosting Open Mic Night at the Railyard on Tuesday night.
Taos Ale House — (575) 758-5522

Beers: Mosaic Pale, Yet-to-be-named IPA, Mogul, Dunkelweizen. Taos Ale House’s single hop Mosaic Pale will be on tap in a few days. The Mogul is a staple at Taos Ale House.
Taos Mesa Brewing — (575) 758-1900

Beers: Big Brown, Kolsh 45, Notorious ESB, Old 96 Sticke Alt, Rainy Day IPA, Superstitious Stout, White Feather. The Big Brown (8.5% ABV) and and Rainy Day IPA (7.6% ABV, 100 IBUs) return to the lineup. White Feather (5.8% ABV), an American pale ale, is also fairly new. Stoutmeister recommends the Superstitious Stout, while Brandon has enjoyed the Notorious ESB in the past. There are also four guest taps featuring Marble Red and Wildflower Wheat, plus Santa Fe Black IPA and Nut Brown.
Three Rivers Brewery — (505) 325-6605
Beers: India Pale Ale, Papa Bear’s Golden Honey Ale, Animas Pale Ale, Red Apple Flyer Cider, Orchard Street Raspberry Wheat, Rasputin’s Imperial Stout (X-Beer), S.M.A.S.H. – EPA, Bisti Blonde, 3 Rivers Scottish Ale, Arroyo Amber Ale, S.M.A.S.H. – Vienna Lager, New London Porter. The Arroyo Amber Ale (5.0% ABV) is the local favorite. It is copper-red in color, medium bodied, and is brewed with caramel malt with a nice hop balance. The newest beer on tap is the Imperial Stout (8.3% ABV).
Cask: Three Rivers is now featuring the Chocolate Oak Imperial Porter. Next up will be the Brandy Oak Imperial Stout.

(Nob Hill is open Monday-Wednesday 3 p.m. to midnight, Thursday 3 p.m. to 2 a.m., Friday-Saturday 1 p.m. to 2 a.m., Sunday 1 p.m. to midnight; Wells Park is open Monday-Thursday 3 p.m. to close, Friday-Sunday 1 p.m. to close)
Beers at Nob Hill: Pilsner #15 (6.8% ABV), Berry Cider, Black IPA, ESB (6.2% ABV). Beers at Wells Park: Luna De Los Muertos imperial stout (9.2% ABV), Barley Wine (9.5% ABV), Sticky Fingers Brown Ale, Black Lager, Javi Lager, Black IPA, Berry Cider, Barn Storm Ale, C+C IPA, Chocolate Milk Stout. The ESB and Pilsner are also at Wells Park, which has 24 total taps (Tractor’s five regular beers have two taps apiece). The Crew highly recommends the Luna De Los Muertos, it’s one of our favorite imperial stouts in town. It’s not barrel-aged, but it still packs a punch. There are so many beers on tap at both Tractor locations that they will cover all types of beer lovers.

Turtle Mountain Brewing Company — (505) 994-9497

Beers: Grandma’s Brown, Triple Play Pale Ale, Oatmeal Stout, Revelation IPA, Walter White Wheat, White Knight Belgian Golden Ale, Red Rye, Cabo Lager, Golden Ale, Oblivion Express Barleywine, Low-Gluten Amber, Hybrid IPA. Revelation IPA, which is an offshoot of TMBC’s Genesis IPA, is brewed using Pils malt and hopped with Simcoe, Summit, Falconer’s Flight, and dry hopped with Simcoe. (7.3% ABV, 100 IBU) Walter White Wheat Lager is a 50-percent wheat beer brewed with a lager yeast, Pilsner malt, dextrose, and a Belgian yeast strain, but no spices, so all the fruitiness comes from the yeast. Beers: Wellhead Pale Ale (5.3% ABV), Roughneck Red Ale (4.8% ABV), Roustabout Porter (4.8% ABV), Cisco Canyon Blonde, Indian Basin Wheat. The Wellhead is located in Artesia. The Roustabout Porter is available in the summer months replacing the stout. The brown-colored porter was originally developed in the 18th Century for the working class or ‘porters’ of London. The malt and hop ingredients are simple and well-balanced. The Roughneck Red is as sweet malty Irish Red ale. The Chinook, Cascade, and Mount Hood hops create a wonderful aroma and flavor combination. Try this microbrew with spicy dishes or steak and the turtle cheesecake dessert.
