Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s eight breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.

If the theme of last week’s beer releases was big, barrel-aged stouts, then the theme this week is hop-forward brews defying the colder season. Of course, New Mexicans can never get enough hops, so we figure this will make some of you quite happy. Things kick off today (Wednesday) with the release of Cactus Flats Hazy IPA with Citra at Bow & Arrow, the second in their series of single-hop brews. This will be available in four-packs and on draft once the patio reopens Thursday. Just a few blocks to the east, Rio Bravo will be releasing cans of Dice Roll Hazy IPA, which won the take-home version of the 2020 New Mexico IPA Challenge a few months back. Sticking the general vicinity of Wells Park, Tractor released its new Monolith Hazy IPA (yes, named for the mystery object in the Utah desert) back on Tuesday, but take note that the Wells Park taproom is temporarily closed, and you can only get it at the Nob Hill and Westside taprooms. If that is quite enough haze, then pop over to Marble today for the release of Double IPA in cans. You can also wish a happy birthday to facilities manager Nate Jackson, who’s pretty much the biggest fan of that beer on the planet. After all those hops, you might need a breather, but alas, you do not get one. Red Door is putting its New England IPA in cans (for real this time) starting Friday. Oh, and at last, La Cumbre is releasing the winter edition of Project Dank IPA, also on Friday, in cans and on tap. And yes, we can say on tap again, because the new public health order allows breweries to have 25-percent occupancy on their patios. We compiled a list of every place that will be open starting today, and those that are sticking with a takeout-only model.

On the new beer front this week, there some other fresh options of a non-IPA variety to check out. Ex Novo will have a short run of cans for Pastel Polo, a key lime-inspired sour, on Thursday, followed by a larger release of their double-decocted doppelbock, Ruminator, on Friday. Red Door will also be releasing Tropical Punch Paleta in cans this Friday. Sidetrack just tapped Brown Chicka Brown Ale. Starr Brothers is back open again, with Starry Spice Holiday Spice Ale now available on tap. Steel Bender will be celebrating the North Fourth Holiday Stop & Shop this Saturday with the return of The Village Idiot on draft, with bottles to follow in a week or two.

Up in Santa Fe, things are quiet this week. Down south, Truth or Consequences Brewing is releasing bottles of its Truth Serum Barleywine, both regular and barrel-aged, while also bringing back some bottles of the 2018 and 2019 versions.

(WEEKEND UPDATE) Three more beers arrived over the weekend, two on tap and one in cans. Boxing Bear released cans of its popular Scotch Rocket at all three locations. Gravity Bound puckers up with Shade Valley Sour IPA now on tap. Nexus feeds a need with Starship Zapata Dark Lager on draft.
